Every time you hear a musical reference – such as the nod to “Office Space” at the end of Episode 2.2, or the “Star Wars” tribute at the beginning of Episode 3.5, those are his skills at work!

Kersten came on board as our composer, on-location sound recordist and sound post-production engineer at the beginning of Season 2, to fill some skills gaps that we identified from Season 1. He upped our game significantly on the audio front, and continues to bring a huge amount to Standard Action through the release of Season 3. We were also very proud to have Kersten recognized by LA WebFest last year for his sound and music work on Season 2.

As a gift to the fans, Kersten and the team have decided to provide – for free – downloads of all the original music composed for the film score of Season 3. We will be releasing the majority of it at the end of the season, but we’ve launched the Standard Action Bandcamp site in preparation, and loaded it up with the theme songs from both Season 2: “New Beginnings” and Season 3: “Storm the Fortress.” They are both available for download right now.

Click here for the Standard Action Bandcamp!

The cinematic music from the Standard Action world would be a fantastic addition to your gaming night. It’ll make your transit commute way more intense, it’ll bring the “medieval” to your next relaxing day at the spa, and it’ll turn your next Lord-of-the-Rings-themed house party into an epic event! We’re very excited to be able to share this with you. There’s going to be a LOT! Enjoy, and stay tuned!

Standard Action Behind the Scenes: The Emergency Set http://standardaction.zombieorpheus.com/2015/02/18/standard-action-behind-the-scenes-the-emergency-set/ http://standardaction.zombieorpheus.com/2015/02/18/standard-action-behind-the-scenes-the-emergency-set/#comments Wed, 18 Feb 2015 18:04:22 +0000 http://standardaction.zombieorpheus.com/?p=3279

Episode 3.6 featured a bunch of footage from the ill-fated forest shoot on Day 7, when the sky decided to open in a torrential downpour. We had an inkling that this might happen, so the day before our Art Director, Carla Miller, and our Assistant Art Director, Edwin Perez (Fernando), built us a brand new Emergency Set – Ikosa’s throne room. The original scene had Ikosa, Orlando and the Minions discussing their plans in the woods, but Rebecca Husain’s beautiful makeup and costume just wasn’t going to hold up to the downpour. So, a new set was born! We moved there halfway through the day – Gary and Edda’s scene was successfully shot in the morning, while Troy, Rebecca, Martin and John kept dry in the afternoon.

Watch for Episode 3.7 on March 10th!

We’ve been hinting for a while now about the true length and breadth of Season 3 of Standard Action. I know we’ve been vague, and I hope we haven’t irritated the heck out of the really detail-oriented folk out there. But now’s the time to set it down in text and silence the rumours. (I’m actually not sure if there are any rumours, but if there are, consider ‘em banished!)

I’m going to indulge myself, and you, with a little trip down memory lane. Season 3 has been a long time in the making. On April 2nd, 2013, we launched a Kickstarter for the season, and shortly thereafter Season 2 launched its finale, “Reckless,” which sent our team on the start of their otherworldly journey, bouncing through interplanar space on their search for Martin.

The Season 3 Kickstarter was modest for the scale of production we had established in Season 2, so we decided to aim low in terms of the size of our season. If we made our total, and no more, we promised a conclusion to the storyline in the form of two episodes, rolled into one 20-minute short film. It would’ve been a challenge to wrap everything up in twenty minutes, but we were willing to try. If we got more than our initial ask, we promised more episodes, and threw in some extra guest stars, digital perks, a musical episode, DVDs and more.

Fortunately, we blew our Kickstarter goal out of the water in no time at all, and we started hitting those stretch goals. Soon we had three, four, and five episodes on the table, and guest stars on board such as Brian Lewis (ZOE), Scott C. Brown (ZOE) and Hannah Spear (Versus Valerie). By the time the Kickstarter ended on May 17th, we had funded six episodes, including a musical, and Clancy Bundy of Transolar Galactica was signed on to appear as well.

Once the Kickstarter ended, the work began. I took a month to write Season 3, and in that time Rob and I decided to give the Kickstarter backers more than they’d funded. We would over-deliver on the number of episodes promised. We were grateful for the opportunity to revisit this world, happy for the funds to do so, and excited to delve back into the story. Also, Rob would sit down to the keyboard and pen an episode, following the immense popularity of the episode he wrote for Season 1 featuring Martin as a cursed Mime: “Don’t Split the Party.” When Season 3 was finished, there were eight episodes on the page.

Then, we started production in July of 2013. Our days were always very, very full. We packed in the pages and worked until we ran out of daylight most days, asking a lot of our crew and our cast. Some of our Kickstarter backers came on board to shoot with us, and we fit in not only the eight episodes, but also two Random Encounters and a music video featuring the talented Eric Fell. It was rewarding, hard work, and we knew while we were shooting that this was bigger than anything we’d ever done with Standard Action before. Principal photography ended in November of 2013, and pickups pushed on until February of 2014.

Then the team scaled back, and our smaller post-production team pushed forward. It became clear very, very quickly in the layout for Season 3 that we had lots of content. In fact, we had much MORE content then we thought we had. Scenes broadened in the editing suite. They got bigger and richer, and the tone was darker. There was more drama, and the drama demanded more space in the edit than the slapstick comedy ever had. When we let the edit breathe, the episodes got long; and in some cases we agreed that they would serve the YouTube audience better if they were split into two separate episodes rather than kept whole. Episode 2 on the page became Episodes 2 and 3; Episode 4 on the page became Episodes 5 and 6.

By the time layout was complete, we didn’t have eight episodes, we had TWELVE. Twelve episodes, all of ten to fifteen minutes in length, or so. That’s about 150 minutes of Season 3 content. We’d funded six, and we had double the amount to deliver. This, of course, comes with it’s own set of challenges. After a lot of discussion on how best to proceed, we decided to deliver it all. Season 3 Kickstarter backers had funded a season – a full, complete story. They deserved to get it. Our work on set, for whatever reason, had turned our eight episodes into twelve, and we had a choice. Cut it back, or let it live; and we decided to let it live.

But the fact remains that twelve episodes is a lot more post-production work than eight, so it became clear that a mid-season break was in order, along the lines of The Walking Dead, Scandal, and every other show on television. Rob Hunt, Kersten Tennert and I are the entirety of our post-production team, and are gathering steam for this final push. You can expect “Episode 3.7: Bigger on the Inside” on Tuesday, March 10th.

So: we asked for the funds to make two episodes, the backers funded six, we wrote eight, and we’re delivering twelve. What a journey.

Thank you for reading through this huge blog post! I know I don’t usually put you through this sort of thing. :)

And for the rest of you…

tl;dr – You’re getting 12 episodes, Actioneers.
